Monsoon 2014 a wet one

The Arizona monsoon gave its last gasp of the season this past weekend, and it was a big one.

A Pacific weather disturbance drawing tropical moisture from the south collided over Arizona Saturday afternoon leaving street flooding, upended trees and power poles splintered like twigs in its wake.

In Fountain Hills the weather station at Fountain Park recorded wind gusts of 52 miles per hour and collected 1.98 inches in the rain gauge.

The Arizona monsoon gave its last gasp of the season this past weekend, and it was a big one.

A Pacific weather disturbance drawing tropical moisture from the south collided over Arizona Saturday afternoon leaving street flooding, upended trees and power poles splintered like twigs in its wake.

In Fountain Hills the weather station at Fountain Park recorded wind gusts of 52 miles per hour and collected 1.98 inches in the rain gauge.

Several of the Maricopa County Flood Control District rain gauges scattered across town received more than two inches including 2.52 inches at Fire Station #1 on Palisades Boulevard.

At the Stoneridge Dam west of Fountain Hills Boulevard off Sycamore Drive collected 2.48 inches and the monitoring site off McDowell Mountain Road on the north edge of town received 2.32 inches.

The rain gauge outside The Times office on Laser Drive collected about 3 inches.

For the season that began June 15 Fountain Hills received 8.46 inches of rain with 5.28 falling in September alone. In August there was 2.43 inches and .75 inch in July.

The first rain of the monsoon did not fall until July 5.
