El Mirage began as a community formed as migrant farm workers and those helping to build water canals in the area settled in the area west of the Agua Fria River. The city has a long history with agriculture, dating back to the Hohokam Native Amerian tribe.
The city was incorporated in 1951 and has seen continued growth as the northwest Valley of Phoenix has seen its population explode. Today the city is nearly 10 square miles and has more than 35,000 residents.
The city has more than 20 neighborhoods and is known for its cultural diversity. It is home to the Dysart Unified School District.
Independent Newsmedia has been serving Valley readers for more than 50 years, starting out in the northwest Valley with community papers in Sun City. It has expanded and includes El Mirage coverage in several of its publications.
