Fountain Hills Times Independent

The Fountain Hills Times Independent has been reporting the local news for the past 50 years. The paper is delivered to  homes and businesses in Fountain Hills, the Verdes and Fort McDowell Yavapai Community.

Along with the paper, Fountain Hills Times Independent staff also put out the annual Community Guide and Business Directory, giving residents and visitors a snapshot of all the community has to offer.

The Times Independent was purchased by Independent Newsmedia Inc. USA in 2023, maintaining the same staff and dedication to local news. The printed and digital paper provides all the information community members crave, including news, sports, education, business, entertainment, religion, social events and more, all focusing on Fountain Hills and its neighbors.

Town history

Fountain Hills is a planned community, started by McCulloch Properties. Development began in 1969 when Fountain Park and the future downtown areas were the first creations. The community was built out from that center. On Dec. 15, 1970, the world’s tallest fountain was turned on for the first time. With the startup of the fountain came new residents from far and wide. Work on the first homes began in 1971, and in 1972, new homeowners had moved in. While the Fountain no longer holds its “world’s tallest” title, it is still a hallmark and major draw for the community.

Early settlers here in the 1970s were retired, but a building boom in the 1980s brought an influx of younger families.

In late 1989, voters approved self-government. The first elected council members took their seats in June 1990. The local government has grown in all areas formerly administered by Maricopa County and has taken on new responsibilities such as parks and recreation, fire protection, town court and contracting for law enforcement with Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office.
