Fountain Hills school board discusses ESA athletes

Several areas of concern to iron out

The Fountain Hills Unified School District (FHUSD) governing school board on Wednesday, May 1, discussed allowing Empowerment Scholarship Account (ESA) students to participate in Fountain Hills High School sports.

There have been public comments surrounding this topic for the past several meetings. Board President Jill Reed has reached out to the Arizona Interscholastic Association, the Arizona School Board Association, the Arizona Department of Education and the Maricopa County Superintendent’s Office for advice.

“Basically, it’s as clear as mud,” Reed said. “They’re pretty much leaving it up to the districts. In one email, it said you could have ESA students be considered the same as homeschool students because they no longer sign the vouchers, and another email said no, ESA students are not homeschool students, so here we are with the board.”
