The Fountain Hills Democratic Club (FHDC) held its final meeting before the summer break Thursday, May 8, at the Fountain Hills Community Center, spotlighting the work of four local nonprofit organizations dedicated to serving both the community and international causes.
The theme of the evening was “Local Non-Profits” and featured presentations by representatives from Bob’s Free Bikes, Fountain Hills Theater, Stand Strong Together and Ukrainian Humanitarian Aid.
Bob’s Free Bikes
Mark Jordan, operations manager and bike mechanic for Bob’s Free Bikes, shared the organization’s mission to provide bicycles to children in the greater Phoenix metropolitan area who would otherwise be unable to have one.
Founded in 2016 by Bob Mandel, the nonprofit began with a goal of giving away one bike a week.
According to Democratic Club spokesperson Dave Long, the group distributed 1,258 bikes to children up to the age of 17 in 2024 alone.
The 501(c)(3) organization operates entirely through volunteer efforts.
Jordan emphasized the transformative impact bike ownership can have on children, offering them responsibility, independence and joy, said Long.
Fountain Hills Theater
Val Stasik, founder and current board president of Fountain Hills Theater, reflected on the organization’s 40-year legacy, highlighting its continued role in inspiring and engaging audiences across the Valley.
The nonprofit 501(c)(3) is known for its award-winning plays and musicals featuring local actors, youth, technicians and volunteers.
With three regularly scheduled seasons - Mainstage, Mainstage Too! and Youth Theater - the company offers year-round performances in its two on-site theaters.
“Our mission is not just to entertain,” Stasik said. “We’re here to educate, train, and support the next generation of artists.”
Fountain Hills Theater remains a cultural cornerstone of the community, offering both artistic programming and educational opportunities that enrich local life through the performing arts, Long added.
Stand Strong Together
Mary Jo Forman, founder and executive director of Stand Strong Together, highlighted the organization’s work providing humanitarian aid to unsheltered individuals and families across Arizona.
The 501(c)(3) community-based group supplies food, hygiene products, clothing and other essentials, often partnering with churches and small shelters.
“We believe in compassion, hope and direct action,” Forman said. “Our volunteers make a real difference for people in transition and in need.”
Stand Strong Together relies heavily on donations and volunteer support to maintain its outreach efforts.
Ukrainian Humanitarian Aid
Fountain Hills resident Mark Lieber spoke about his hands-on work supporting Ukraine in the face of Russian aggression. With over 30 years of experience in consumer electronics, Long says Lieber also channels his skills and energy into humanitarian missions abroad.
His work includes supporting organizations such as Cactus and Tryzub, We Are the Angel and Razom for Ukraine.
Lieber has traveled to Záhony, Hungary, to assist with refugee evacuations and to the Ukrainian cities of Lviv and Kyiv to deliver medical supplies, night vision equipment and other aid.
“Our goal is to help ensure Ukraine’s victory and survival,” Lieber said. “This is a fight for freedom and democracy.”
