The community is invited to the next Fountain Hills Artists’ Gallery’s weekly demonstration Tuesday, Nov. 26, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The featured artist for the event is scratchboard artist Sonja Jones.
Jones is a nature and wildlife artist who resides in Rio Verde and works primarily with scratchboard, a kaolin clay tablet that is coated with black India ink.
The artist then sketches their designs into it with a variety of tools including craft knives, tattoo needles and fiberglass brushes, producing stunning black and white designs with tonal values and depth.
The etched clay is also receptive to adding color back in which Jones frequently enjoys doing with a combination of colored inks and watercolor paints.
Jones’ hobbies of photography, birding and hiking combine nicely with her art endeavors, allowing her to gather both inspiration and subject photos for her artwork while out on her favorite trails with her camera, a press release said.
Besides being one of the member artists at the Fountain Hills Artists Gallery, Jones has also been featured in the 2024 Spring edition of Art & Color Magazine. She currently has artwork on display in the internationally renowned Birds In Art 2024 exhibit at the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Museum in Wausau, Wis.
The gallery is located at 16858 E. Avenue of the Fountains and is open Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sundays, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
