It’s still early, but there was no new action this past week in the shaping of the fall Town Council race.

At this time candidates may pick-up information packets and get ready to circulate petitions to get their name on the primary ballot, which will happen Tuesday, Aug. 26.

Thus far Mayor Linda Kavanagh has stepped up to begin her effort to gain a second term. She has picked up the paperwork and has filed her statement of organization with the Town Clerk’s office.

At this point there is no one who has expressed an interest in challenging her.

There are two individuals who contacted Town Hall and received the information packet on becoming a candidate. They are Nick DePorter and Lina Bellenir.

Both have made previous unsuccessful runs for council. As of press time neither had filed a statement of organization, according to Town Clerk Bev Bender. Until that statement is filed they cannot collect signatures on nominating petitions.

The three incumbent council members whose seats are up include Ginny Dickey, Tait Elkie and Henry Leger. Although Elkie has stated publicly that he is not seeking a second term, there has been no official comment from Dickey or Leger on their status. They would both be seeking a third council term if they choose to run again.

The earliest a potential candidate may turn in nominating petitions and other paperwork is Monday, April 28, the deadline to complete the work to meet the deadline to get on the ballot is Wednesday, May 28, at 5 p.m.

This is the first town election to be held in the fall. The state legislature passed a law in 2011 requiring all municipalities to consolidate their elections with state, county and federal elections in the fall.

Those with an interest in running may drop by Town Hall during business hours to pick-up an information packet that includes all information required to get on the ballot including financial disclosure. Specific questions may be directed to Bender by calling Town Hall or email at bbender@fh.az.gov.

Voters who have their names on the permanent early voter list, but are not affiliated and registered with an official political party, will not automatically receive a ballot in the mail for the primary election.

Voters wanting to vote in the Primary Election will need to request a ballot. They should receive notification by mail 90 days prior to the election informing them of the need to ask for a specific ballot. They can request the ballot of a recognized party or ask for just the primary ballot for the Town Council election.
