Mayor touts economic vitality

In her state of the town address, Mayor Linda Kavanagh emphasized the town’s new vitality and economic resurgence over the past year, as well as the promise that the near future holds.

“We can look forward to infrastructure improvements, including the rebuilding of Saguaro Boulevard and the implementation of a good, sound pavement management plan into the future,” Kavanagh said.

“The median on Avenue of the Fountains will get a much needed make-over with shade, benches and new fountains and an electrical and irrigation system we can count on.

“It will be a great improvement to our parks systems for all to enjoy.”

Kavanagh said the town is well positioned to move forward as the economy recovers.

“We have developed a good, sound economic development plan to take Fountain Hills into future years and have just recently taken on the important task of promoting tourism,” she said.

“All of this has been accomplished with a very limited staff, working hard each day, dedicated to their jobs, to bring you – our citizens – the service you deserve.”

As the economy strengthens so too is the growth in homebuilding in the community.

“These new homes will bring new neighbors to our town that will help our businesses thrive, fill some of those empty desks at school and help us to continue to pay for the amenities that make our town the great place it is to live, work and play,” Kavanagh said.

The mayor also cited efforts by staff and the council to improve the working climate for business including updating the sign ordinance and making it easier for businesses to access permits and forms.

She also mentioned strengthening relationships with the Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation and other neighboring communities.

“We have developed a strong, working relationship with other East Valley communities that enabled us to defeat a legislative bill that would have been devastating economically to our town,” Kavanagh said.

She also had kudos for the town’s contract providers for law enforcement and fire and emergency medical services.

Community volunteers were also singled out for praise.

“We have expanded our volunteer program, taking advantage of our town residents’ expertise and very generous gift of their time,” Kavanagh said. “This has enabled us to continue many of the wonderful events and programs that have become a part of our lives.”

More than 700 volunteers participate in dozens of programs and activities to help fellow citizens, present activities and participate in everyday town operations.

“I promised you when I took office that I would work hard for you, keep our government transparent, listen to what you have to say, and spend every taxpayer dollar carefully – I’ve also even managed to save a few animals along the way,” Kavanagh said. “I have kept that promise and reaffirm it to you …”
