Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation celebrates sovereignty
(Independent Newsmedia/Bob Burns)
Members of the Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation and supporters participate in the annual Sovereignty Day celebration on May 8. Fort McDowell has designated Sovereignty Day to mark the anniversary of the day, May 12, 1992, when federal agents raided the tribal gaming center and confiscated slot machines. Tribal members at that time closed the exits to the gaming center parking lot forcing a two-week stand-off with the government ultimately leading to the State of Arizona agreeing to gaming compacts for tribal communities.
