Blessing was being held at the jail infirmary following her arrest with her advanced age cited as the reason. After she suffered a stroke while in custody, she was released to hospice care in November. She had missed several court appearances with her attorney citing her health as a reason for her absence.
On July 2, 2018, Maricopa County Sheriff’s deputies were called to a residence in an upscale condominium complex at Saguaro and El Lago boulevards. They found Blessing sitting in a chair waiting for them. Her 72-year-old son, Thomas, was found dead in bed.
Blessing allegedly told deputies she shot her son because he was planning to move her to an assisted living facility, and she did not want to go there.
The son’s girlfriend was present at the time of the shooting and told deputies she disarmed Blessing who made attempts to shoot her after killing Thomas. Blessing had two handguns concealed in the pockets of her bathrobe when she confronted her son and his girlfriend.
The family had challenged the Sheriff’s Office regarding whether they had done enough after responding to the residence several times previously. An MCSO audit of the calls reportedly found the deputies acted appropriately.
