The Oct. 7, 2023, terrorist attack from Gaza on Israel was recently commemorated on Oct. 7, 2024, at the Chabad Edelman Jewish Center with two special guests.
Members of the Fountain Hills community, both Jews and non-Jews, came together to mark the first anniversary of the massacre.
They heard two Israeli soldiers, Moriyah Azulay and Or Barak, speak about the situation in Israel since last October and share their personal reflections about that day.
On Oct. 7, 2023, terrorists from Gaza invaded Israel and massacred over 1,200 Jews, many of whom were civilians sleeping in their homes and others who were dancing at a nearby music festival.
A total of 251 hostages were abducted and taken to Gaza, many of whom have since been murdered, according to a press release.
Azulay has spent time stationed with the Israel Defense Forces in the West Bank, and Barak served in a combat support unit in Gaza.
Even for these soldiers, who are citizens of Israel and live every day in the shadow of terrorism and war, the Oct. 7 massacre was a cataclysmic tragedy that totally transformed their lives, the release read.
Besides personally knowing victims of the massacre including soldiers who have since lost their lives or been injured in military maneuvers designed to eliminate the terrorists in Gaza and Lebanon - Azulay and Barak have themselves experienced firsthand the hatred and danger that comes with living close to the enemy.
Both soldiers described undergoing a spiritual reawakening in response to the Oct. 7 massacre. Now they are on their own personal missions to document the tragedy and bring a message to communities around the world.
They emphasized how uniting with others to combat evil will be the key to winning the war against terrorism – and they are fervent in their belief that this will happen.
The presentation included pictures and videos of their personal experiences. Attendees wished Azulay and Barak good luck and success in their mission.
