The Town Council voted 7-0 last week to approve a zoning change to allow for the development of a vehicle storage facility on about two acres of land on Desert Vista Drive and Saxon Drive.
The plan for the storage yard is to provide enclosed, climate-controlled storage for vehicles.
Anavada Holdings, LLC, is proposing to purchase a 2.07-acre site and convert it into the storage facility.
The property is currently unused and includes a building that formerly housed a church and medical clinic before that. It was built as the first medical clinic in Fountain Hills.
The plan calls for the existing building to remain and serve as an office.
The project, known as Desert Vista Storage Center, would have 86 units at 16-foot height and able to house vehicles or RVs.
The current zoning for the site is C-1, which allowed the medical facility and church, but storage facilities are not permitted in that zoning district. The zoning change designates the property as C-3 zoning.
Garry Hays, an attorney for the developer, said the plan is specifically for vehicle storage and not a place to keep household items that no longer fit in the house.
He said the owner has developed several of these facilities elsewhere and it is convenient for residents who use Fountain Hills as a secondary home or have vintage vehicles to secure.
