'Soul of Broadway' opens at theater

The Soul of Broadway presents Act Two of its musical revue that celebrates African-American musicals and characters from the “Great White Way.”

With repertoire from Ain’t Misbehavin’ to The Color Purple, The Soul of Broadway: Act II doesn’t leave anything out as a group of talented performers take the audience on a journey to some of Broadway’s famous hits and precious gems.

The show, which returns to Fountain Hills Theater after a near sell-out run in 2012, features such songs as Can’t Help Loving Dat Man of Mine, Showboat; Ease on Down the Road, The Wiz and the title tune from Dreamgirls. Enjoy, too, treasures such as the powerful The Bus, Caroline or Change or the funny, bring-down-the-house Big Black Man.

The Soul of Broadway is the brainchild of Chanel Bragg and Mitchell Vantrease and has been in existence for five years. They, along with other fellow African-American performers, wanted to create a show that both allowed them to perform material that showed their strengths and reflected their experiences.

Both Bragg and Vantrease began to spearhead the venture, discussing the project with other performers who felt the same. What resulted was a revue of songs from Broadway shows that featured African-American performers.

The original show premiered in June 2010 at Theater Works in Peoria to great acclaim. Four years later, The Soul of Broadway continues to thrive, rotating a pool of talented cast members into their productions.

This show’s cast features Matravius Avent, Anthony Bragg, Chanel Bragg, Anne-Lise Koyabe, Miguel Jackson, Krystal Pope and Tyra Young.

“I’m very proud of how far we’ve come and of the opportunities that have allowed us to share our talent and experiences with audiences across the Valley,” said Vantrease, co-founder and co-creator.
