Skillicorn’s “ICE Cooperation Resolution” was only about politics

OPINION — In his recent letter, Vice Mayor Allen Skillicorn proclaims that the “ICE Cooperation Resolution” is not about politics but about “protecting our community from violent, criminal illegal aliens.”  Skillicorn fails to explain how the non-committal resolution he drafted provides the promised protection.

The resolution does not obligate the town to cooperate with or support ICE. It states only that it is the town’s intent to “comply with” and “not impede” or “obstruct” the enforcement of federal immigration law.

Councilmember Kalivianakis’ assessment that the resolution represented “a solution looking for a problem” was both candid and correct. There is no evidence of marauding “illegal aliens” threatening the safety of residents. In addition, Fountain Hills has no legal authority to engage in any “proactive” cooperation with ICE.
