Fountainside Arts Studio at Plaza Waterfront offers four classes in printmaking and hand papermaking in May and June.

Gallery co-owner Marcia McClellan teaches the classes. Six students are the maximum number, said McClellan. Classes in the non-toxic art studio are appropriate for both beginning and experienced individuals.

The gallery is located at 12625 N. Saguaro Blvd., unit 115, facing Fountain Park.

To register for any of the upcoming classes, call McClellan at 251-1397.

Introduction to printmaking will introduce students to the basic techniques, tools and materials used to create a fine art print.

Students will experience with both Plexiglas and collagraph (textured) printing plates. This introductory class is required before taking other printing classes unless a person is experienced using a press.

The one-day workshop will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Wednesday, May 8, or Friday, May 10. Tuition is $90; the supply fee is $15.

Introduction to solar printmaking will teach students to create quality impressions through a non-toxic environmentally friendly printing process.

McClellan said solarplate printmaking allows the artist to create images through drawing, painting, photocopy or the computer.

Images are transferred to a light sensitive printing plate, developed with water, and then printed with inks.

Each artist will make two small solar plates and then use them to “play” on the printing press to create unique prints.

Tuition for the one-day session, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, May 18, or Tuesday, May 21, is $90. The supply fee is $20.

Two three-hour workshops will teach students to construct printing plates through the use of mixed-media collage materials.

The plates will be used to create fine art prints rich with texture, color and depth. This versatile and flexible printing process allows the artist to use common materials and found objects in new ways, said McClellan.

The Introduction to collagraph printmaking, will be 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., both days, Monday, May 13, and Monday, May 20. Tuition is $110 with a $20 supply fee.

Introduction to hand papermaking will be offered in two-day workshops lasting three hours each day, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Monday, June 10, and Tuesday, June 11. Alternate times are Friday, June 14, and Saturday, June 15.

McClellan said each student will create a stack of handmade cotton rag papers. This introduction is required before a student can enroll in other papermaking classes.

Classes will include beating pulp, pulling and couching sheets, inclusions, pressing and drying.

The fee is $110, plus an additional $15 for supplies.
