Should Arizona have a ‘stupid hiker law?’

Posted

Hiking in the heat is potentially dangerous. Yet despite posted warnings, heat-of-day trail closures and extensive news coverage of rescues, hikers continue to ignore warnings. They don’t take enough water. They aren’t physically up to the challenge. Not only is it a serious health risk that can lead to heat stress, heat stroke and even death, it puts first responders in peril, as well. They, too, are at risk as they lug equipment in the heat to rescue people. It costs time and money and diverts responders from other emergencies. Is it time for a “stupid hiker law” that requires people pay for rescue operations, or should lawmakers well enough alone?
