Paige Productions Youth Theater (PYT) presents “Miss Understood: A New Musical,” an original production written by a local family spanning three generations.
Set in the quirky, secret-filled town of Dream Valley, the musical follows junior high students through a beauty pageant, a kids-only game show and the ups and downs of growing up.
Themes of friendship, technology, bullying and the complex bond between mothers and daughters take center stage.
The 60-minute musical was co-written by mother-daughter team Shannon Underwood and Mountainside Middle School student Paige Underwood.
“Miss Understood” will debut as one of PYT’s 2025 Summer Theater Camps, which runs from June 16–27.
The two-week camp will culminate in performances at 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Friday, June 27, at Fountain Hills Presbyterian Church (13001 N. Fountain Hills Blvd).
PYT owner Paige Beckman says she is thrilled to support young artists and original storytelling.
“I love that writing plays and music has become a family hobby for them,” Beckman said. “Even grandma and grandpa—Will and Patti Hegarty—pitched in, along with Aunt Kelly and 10-year-old cousin Aubrey Erdos.”
Shannon Underwood said the writing process has been “incredibly collaborative. My daughter, Paige Underwood, created the Bow Girls—characters full of sass and over-the-top drama. I wrote for Savvy, a former beauty queen turned competitive realtor. As Paige grows up, it’s amazing to see how her characters grow, too.”
Paige Underwood also commented.
“My family and I have made something I’ll never forget,” said the 13-year-old. “We spent weekends acting out scenes and trying different songs. I’ll always remember creating this musical together.”
The camp is open to students ages 5–18 and runs weekdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Campers will develop skills in acting, singing, dancing and stagecraft while preparing for the live show.
Paige Productions was recently voted a Fountain Hills Favorite for Best Live Theater and Performing Arts School.
