At the state track and field meet held over the weekend, seven Falcon athletes competed and placed at the top of their division.

On Friday, May 3, and Saturday, May 4, Madison George, Stephanie Lies, Brant Ralph, Porter Sweet, Lauren Shultz, Darrean Smith and Holly Garrett competed in the state meet hosted at Mesa Community College.

The Lady Falcons placed 11th out of the 40 teams competing and the boys team placed 25th out of 45 teams.

Three of the Falcons performed so well that they were invited to compete in the Meet of Champions at ASU this Saturday, May 11.

The three Falcons invited were Stephanie Lies, Porter Sweet and Madison George.

The top two preforming Falcons at the meet were George and Lies.

George, who spent the season setting and then breaking her own school records for pole vault, placed first in the state with a vault of 13’. George’s jump not only sets a new school record, but also a new Division III girls state record.

George also competed in the 100m and 200m dash events, placing eighth in the 100m with a time of 13.34 and placing sixth in the 200m with a time of 26.63.

The other top Falcon, Lies, took first place in the javelin event, throwing for a distance of 124’ 3’’.

In the other field events, Lies placed 13th in the shot put event with a throw of 30’ 11.05’’. Lies took 16th in the discus throw with a toss of 88’ 2’’.

The final two Lady Falcons that competed in state also competed in the javelin, discus and pole vault events.

Lauren Schultz placed seventh overall in the javelin event with a throw of 105’ 11’’, and eighth in the discus with a throw of 98’.

Holly Garrett placed 18th overall in the pole vault event with a jump of 8’.

On the boys side of the track, Porter Sweet placed fifth in the javelin with an astonishing throw of 160’.

Darrean Smith also competed in the javelin event and, with his throw of 150’, he placed ninth.

Brant Ralph was the final boy to compete this time in the discus event. Ralph took third in the state with a toss of 146’ 2’’.

Head coach Nick Goodman said he was proud of the big impact his smaller roster was able to make this season.

“I am very proud of the FHHS track and field team,” Goodman said. “We were a small group, especially at the state championships, but we were a mighty group, accomplishing great results this year.”
