The religion of Islam has been incorrectly portrayed in the news of late.

Father John McDonough, pastor of Church of the Ascension, believes that before there can be change, there must be understanding.

With that in mind, he

and Azra Hussain will team up to present a better understanding of the foundations and practices of Islam on Saturday, Aug. 6.

They will conduct a seminar/discussion: The Truth Concerning Islam – Cutting Through Myth and Bias from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the Franciscan Renewal Center, 5802 E. Lincoln Drive, Scottsdale. The cost is $40 per person and includes lunch.

Hussain is the president, founder and director of the Islamic Speakers Bureau of Arizona, a non-profit organization providing education about Islam and Muslim culture since 1999.

Father John has long been involved in fostering ecumenical and inter-faith understanding.

Deacon Phil Locascio, also from Church of the Ascension, will serve as host and moderator. There will be time for questions and answers.

Pre-registration is required. You can register online at THECASA.org or by calling call 480-948-7460, Amy, at extension 132.
