As a weathered old man walked on a sandy beach, he noticed a young man ahead of him picking up starfish and flinging them into the sea. Catching up with the young man he asked, “Why are you throwing these starfish into the surf?”
The young man answered, “These starfish are stranded and will surely die if I leave them on the beach in the morning sun.”
“But the beach goes on for miles and there are millions of starfish,” countered the old man. “How can you possibly make a difference?”

The young man paused, looked at the starfish in his hand and then threw it gently into the safety of the waves. He turned to the old man and said, “It made a difference to that one.”
Thank you, Heather Ware, volunteer coordinator for the Town of Fountain Hills, for coordinating last Saturday’s Make a Difference Day.
