Volleyball earns two wins

It was a big week for the Falcon volleyball team with the Fountain Hills squad earning a quick win over Poston Butte before edging out a tough Veritas Prep to go 2-0 overall.

According to head coach Peter McGloin, this week’s performances were possibly enough to push the Falcons into the state tournament but, with a couple of weeks remaining in the regular season, he and his team don’t plan on leaving anything to chance.

Enjoying a brief break from competition through fall break, the volleyball team won’t have a match this week.

The Falcons will return for an extremely busy week to make up for it beginning on Oct. 20, when the team will host Maricopa at 6 p.m.

The girls will be back on the court the following night for a 6 p.m. outing against Chandler Prep before heading into a two-day weekend tournament at Florence.

Poston Butte

The Falcons played host to Poston Butte on Oct. 6, earning a workmanlike victory over the visiting team in three quick matches.

The Falcons dominated the competition in match one, earning a 25-8 victory. Poston improved as the match went on but ultimately dropped the next two games, too, 25-17, 25-22.

According to McGloin, this was a solid way to kick off the week.

“Poston Butte was a good game,” he added.

“Everybody played pretty well.”

Paige Greenly provided plenty of power at the net, earning eight kills on the evening, with Corrin Schulze adding five and KC McMahon adding a big 11.

Jenna Serrano had a huge night of serving, earning 10 aces overall.

McMahon added 13 digs to her night’s performance, with Rylee Bell providing 14 assists and Amanda Barbagallo chipping in another 10.

Veritas Prep

Two evenings later and the Falcons were on the road at Veritas Prep to take part in an extremely close competition.

The Falcons fell behind in two matches, losing narrow competitions 25-20, 25-23.

The team finally fell into sync come game three, though, earning a 25-18 victory before going on to claim a 25-19 win in game four.

This set up a fifth and final set, where the Falcons stayed in control and earned a 15-9 victory to claim a 3-2 overall win.

“In the Veritas match we came out really flat again,” McGloin said.

“We have to be prepared to be at our best at all times. I think we learned from this, so I’m happy for that.”

Once the Falcons got their act together, though, McGloin said the Falcons maintained a solid momentum through the final three games of the night.

“Too many girls on the court weren’t focused or playing with enough energy in those first sets, and that’s what happened,” McGloin added.

“Those last three sets we were playing together and everybody had each other’s backs, so it was a completely different game.”

KC McMahon led the team with a massive 19 kills this outing, with Greenly and Amara Feyrer-Melk chipping in nine apiece.

Paula Iwaoka had four aces while Greenly and Serrano added three of their own.

Greenly provided five solo blocks against Veritas while McMahon added 21 digs and Iwaoka provided another 13.

“It was a tale of two teams,” McGloin said.

“If we’re that good team, we can beat a lot of people. That was a big win for us.”
