VFW elects new officers

Fountain Hills VFW Post 7507 recently elected and installed new officers for 2016-17.

The ceremony took place in the new post home, the first since the building was dedicated in April.

Re-elected as commander was Carl Krawczyk, a Vietnam War Army veteran. He is only the second commander to be elected to serve two terms.

Other post officers for the coming year are Senior Vice Commander, John Sullivan, U.S. Air Force Vietnam War veteran; Junior Vice Commander Ellen Flanary, U.S. Marine Corp retiree and Iraq/Afghanistan veteran; Quartermaster Stephen Messel, U.S. Army Vietnam War veteran; Service Officer and Surgeon Merritt Miller, U.S. Army Vietnam War veteran; Chaplain Lou Maedglin, U.S. Navy World War II veteran; Judge Advocate Boris Biloskirka, U.S. Army Vietnam War veteran; and Adjutant Boe James, U.S. Navy retiree, Operation Sharp Edge, Liberia. Trustees are Alonzo Shattuck, U.S. Army World War II veteran; Richard Taylor, U.S. Army Vietnam veteran; and Mark Kline, U.S. Army, Korea.

The build out of the Post Home continues thanks to the many contributions of local residents and merchants. Post members will be better able to provide services to the community, especially to other veterans.

Build out plans include installation of computers and other items.

With the new post home, members will be able to assemble for meetings and social functions easily. Currently being planned is an ice cream social from 4-6 p.m. July 4 just prior to the town's festivities in Fountain Park. The ice cream social will be open to the general public at no charge and will be another opportunity for the post members to show off their new building and to thank the public for all the support given to the VFW.

Buying the shell building allowed the post to move in much earlier than building a post on the vacant lot next to the Chamber of Commerce. The post bought that property four years ago and sold it last week.
