Fire season is here, typically beginning in May and ending in November. An abundance of winter precipitation has left the desert green with lush vegetation. With the arrival of the hot, dry weather it won’t be long before the green turns to brown, and brown means fuel for wildfires.
According to the State Forestry Division winds, drought, and high temperatures have combined to make Arizona’s forests and desert areas extremely dry this year. Conditions are so dry, and there is so much dry wood and vegetation, that many public lands have already issued restrictions.

The Rio Verde Fire District, in cooperation with the local Firewise committees and community associations, are being proactive in preparations for what is expected to be a very active fire season.
Extraordinary progress has been made in creating a fire break around the community, and efforts are currently under way to cut back common areas within the Verde communities.
The Rio Verde Fire District stands prepared to deal with any type of wildfire emergency that threatens the community, but residents’ help is needed.
Consider the following Firewise recommendations:
*Clear a 30-foot area around your house of all dead grass and debris.
*Trim up all trees and bushes, removing any dead branches.
*Ensure large trees are clear from near roof areas to prevent fire from jumping onto the home.
Contact the fire department with any questions about preparing for this upcoming fire season.
Call (480) 471-2304, or, contact the local Firewise Committee chair. For Rio Verde call Eb Scheuing at 480-471-7393. In Tonto Verde call Marty Bowin at 480-471-0004.
