Unique bird lands in lake

A new type of bird has been discovered hanging around Fountain Park, but it won’t be migrating anytime soon.

“Big Blue,” a sculpture by Don Kenworthy, was erected last week in Fountain Lake near the performance pad.

The Public Art Committee had first asked for the sculpture to be placed on an island near the pad, but the Town Council balked after hearing concerns from residents who have been working on preserving the lake’s islands.

The piece was donated by former Mayor Jerry Miles and his wife Jackie.

Councilman Dennis Brown and his wife Judy covered the costs of placing and erecting the sculpture in the lake.

“Dennis actually suggested the water location, and it looks outstanding,” Miles said.

“Dennis covered all the costs and labor of getting it in place. So kudos to him.

“I’ll be interested in the public response to this one. I think it looks great.”
