When the red “No” signs started popping up followed by the teal signs echoing the same sentiments, I felt I had to speak up.

I honestly understand both sides of the tax increase question. I wore my “Vote Yes” button while walking in the park and was stopped by a gentleman who asked me why I supported it. I explained the lack of funding with less building, the aging of our roadways and the cutbacks at the town level. He responded he didn't trust government, especially the town government.

I’ve heard it over and over how money we squandered on a study for the infamous lagoon. How one vote before was to give these people a blank check for roads.

I accept we need more money in the coffers. I will vote yes but when it comes to voting for council and mayor, I will look long and hard at their records (if incumbents) and the platforms they’re running on. The cost of doing business is escalating and we need representatives who are fiscally responsible.

We have to trust government. It’s what we have. It’s our responsibility, more than ever, to show up, question and vote. We only have the citizenry to blame if bad decisions continue to be reached by the town council. It’s the old saying, “If you didn't vote, don't complain.”
