Toys for Tots

I grew up in a small town in southern Iowa in one of the poorest counties in the state of Iowa. I received my last Christmas present as a child at the age of 12. It was a homemade white nightgown. My 10 year old brother received his last present which was a set of long underwear.

Christmas which is supposed to be a glorious celebration is a very painful one for many less fortunate children in this country. The Marines Toys for Tots make Christmas time very special for many children who would otherwise receive little to nothing in the way of presents and food.

The American Legion Post 58 in Fountain Hills hosted the U.S. Marines Toys for Tots party on Saturday, Nov. 23. The generosity of the members of Post 58 is overwhelming. We raised a few thousand dollars and many toys for Maricopa County less fortunate children and families.

The raffle table was four tables long, overflowing with items donated by the members of Post 58 and businesses in this community. I have never seen a raffle table so full. The presents donated by members were also overwhelming.

There were countless hours of time donated to make this event a huge success. There are so many people to thank that I can’t begin to thank them all. In this season of hustle and bustle with busy schedules, so many people gave so much.

From the bottom of my heart I thank you all. The Marines and many civilians have made it possible for Christmas to be a time of love and joy who would otherwise have pain.

To all the service man and women, you are still continuing to give of yourself. I thank you. To the member and employees of Post 58 American Legion, you are amazing. Thank you all.
