Town, Fountain View team up for needed service

The local Home Delivered Meals program has partnered with Fountain View Village kitchen since 2001, developing a successful partnership.

Their joint goal is providing nutritional mid-day meals for individuals who require meal assistance, allowing them to reside as long as possible in the comfort of their own homes.

The Fountain View Village kitchen is open year-round and centrally located within the three Home Delivered Meals delivery routes, making it convenient for the more than 250 volunteers delivering meals on an annual basis.

Special dietary meals are prepared in addition to “regular” meals. Special meals include diabetic, mechanical, vegetarian as well as accommodating certain food allergies.

Each meal consists of a hot entrée served in a disposable three-compartment aluminum container as well as a cold sack containing a salad, fruit, dessert and milk. The fee per meal is $7.

Clients who are unable to pay for meals may qualify for meal assistance through Area Agency on Aging, a private, non-profit organization serving Maricopa County. Age is not a factor in determining eligibility for the meals.

If you are a resident of Fountain Hills and are recovering from surgery or have physical limitations or restrictive health conditions or are 80 years of age or older and have difficulty preparing meals, you would qualify for the Home Delivered Meals program.

Clients request the days they wish to receive meals. Meals are delivered 365 days of the year. Meals are delivered by teams of two between the hours of 11 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.

A side benefit to the program is that it serves as a “wellness” check. Volunteers are instructed to call emergency contacts if there is no answer by the client when a meal is delivered.

Anyone interested in having a meal delivered and meets the criteria is encouraged to contact the John O’Flynn Activity Center at 816-5226.

Trained FVV kitchen staff prepare, package and place the meals in hot and cold delivery containers.

Matt Hastings, an award-winning chef at Fountain View Village, insures that the meals provided meet dietary standards as established by state and federal guidelines, according to HDM and town officials.
