The facts

Facts sure can be confusing. Some people cannot accept them. Last week, a letter titled “Tax Needed,” the writer made the statement: “a recent writer suggested that enacting a town property tax was imminent and could result in annual increases two percent per year and that we would have no say in the matter.” “That simply is not true” He stated.

I never said the tax was imminent. We the people of Fountain Hills have voted it down three times. The last time by over 60 percent. No matter what the writer of the “Tax needed” letter states, the following is a fact of law. The citizens of Fountain Hills cannot stop the town council if they choose to raise the tax two percent a year every year forever. It’s insane to think you can recall or vote out every Town Council if we think they’re over-spending.

How would this work? A group of people don’t like next year’s approved budget, let’s recall the Council. I guess we forgot to recall President Obama, the Congress and Senate when they increased the national debt from $10 trillion to $20 trillion. The only control we could have over this tax is to never approve it.

The letter writer wants us to face reality and work together. That is what we are doing. The town has made a sufficient reduction in staff that was not needed. We have passed bonds to maintain and repair our infrastructure, and will continue to do so. At least when the bonds are paid that cost comes off our tax roll.

The “Tax needed” writer is right about one thing, “no one wants an out of control property tax.” That will start when you approve a town property tax. Having lower taxes works for everybody, especially new families.
