Members of the Sunset Kiwanis club stepped up to the plate by volunteering their time at the local food bank and adopting families in their time of need during Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Eager Kiwanis members have helped at the Extended Hands Food Bank twice this holiday season.

The first service project was Nov. 21, filling holiday boxes of food items for preparing a hearty dinner including the turkey and assorted pies for dessert.

Clients were also given an additional food box beyond their monthly allotment.

Kiwanians Julie Orwin, Don Vohs, Ron Bahrmasel, Tessa Fiddler and Linda Metzger distributed 25 holiday boxes in under two hours.

The club once again heeded a call to help the food bank on Dec 19, assembling 27 food boxes to be given over the next few days prior Christmas.

The team consisting of Don Vohs, Margaret Ziefert, Bill Myhr, Tom Aiello, Linda Metzger and Sylvia Bonner worked at a feverish pace to complete the task in time to give them out to families along with holiday food boxes and turkeys.

For the second year in a row for its holiday project, the club helped out needy families through Adopt a Family.

A committee consisting of Margaret Ziefert, Rena Bahrmasel, Robert Bailey and Steve Coover coordinated the project along with the rest of the club filled requested items such as socks, shoes, clothing, household items and a twin mattress, which Robert Bailey volunteered to take on as a task.

Bailey made contact with Mattress Firm, a retailer in town. Through conversation with the store manager he explained that the mattress would be going to a needy family in town, and the manager volunteered to donate the mattress to Kiwanis.

Sunset Kiwanis wishes to thank Mattress Firm for its generosity.
