Sunset Kiwanis accepts recyclables, benefits children

Homeowners have ongoing opportunities to recycle many products and help a local non-profit service organization at the same time.

The Sunset Kiwanis Club has a facility on Kiwanis Drive that houses several outside bins for recycling purposes.

The seven bins collect such items as cardboard, aluminum, paper and plastic.

Glass cannot be collected at this time.

Sunset Kiwanis Club President Mike Fleming said residents have continued to support the program since it was launched in the fall of 2010.

The recycling products are picked up by a recycling vendor who gives money to the service club, which is a part of Kiwanis International.

“All the money collected during our recycling program is given back to the kids to support many worthwhile programs,” Fleming added.

The Sunset Kiwanis Club supports the Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, Phoenix Children’s Hospital, Fountain Hills Youth Theater, Key Club (a high school Kiwanis club) and gives out high school scholarships.

Cardboard should be broken down before being inserted into the respective bins.

“If there is a resident who is moving into the community who has a lot of boxes after unpacking, we will come and pick up boxes if they are broken down,” Fleming said.

The club’s goal is to provide residents with a needed one-stop recycling location where they can bring all of their recyclables (except glass) and support a local non-profit organization.

“We realize the town’s solid waste collection system offers a recycling component, but many homeowners continue to give us their recycling products,” Fleming said.

“We urge other residents to support us as well. We’re doing a lot of good things in town.

“The Kiwanis mission is serving the children of the world, and that’s what we’re all about.”

The Sunset Kiwanis Activity Center is located on Kiwanis Drive, just south of Fountain Park.
