The 2013 Arizona Football Coaches Association All-Star Football game was cancelled, but Fountain Hills Falcons Justin Steuber and Andrew Capirchio will still be honored for being named to the team.
The All-Star Game, originally scheduled to take place this past Saturday, June 22, was cancelled due to the low number of confirmed participants.
The AZFCA made an official statement saying it had regretfully decided to cancel the game.
“Three weeks out from the scheduled check-in date, only 32 out of 64 all-star players were confirmed to play,” reads the statement.
“The board determined that a minimum of 30 players were needed on each team. These numbers are required for proper preparation in practices and fielding an offensive, defensive and special team unit during the game.”
On behalf of the AZFCA board, Lee Brush said that the decision “was not made easily,” and that the members of the board understand the disappointment for those players who had already confirmed their participation.
Those members included Steuber and Capirchio, both of whom were ready and willing to strap on their football pads one final time as a high school player.
Still, both athletes will retain their honors as members of the all-star team. The AZFCA has stated that it still plans to deliver team jerseys and plaques to all players.
