Solidarity

To the students of Fountain Hills who stood outside in solidarity on March 14, 2018, during their spring break, on the one-month anniversary of the Parkland shooting in remembrance and to say enough is enough – I thank you.

Where adults have faltered and lost track, your bright light is showing the way. As adults, we need to listen to you when you say you are afraid to go to school. We need to listen to you when you say you sit in your classrooms, looking for a place to hide and for something to throw if a shooter enters your classroom.

Some of you might have been in the lockdown at Fountain Hills High School that occurred one week before Parkland. All of you have experienced mass shooter drills.

This is our fault, the adults’ fault, the parents’ fault. We let this happen. We allowed the gun lobby to make puppets of our politicians and oppose sensible gun legislation that the majority of Americans favor. We know, deep down, that this is wrong. But some of us still sit idly by, sending you to school while continuing to let gun violence happen, again and again.

Some of us act out by saying you should be focused on bullying, texting and driving, and some even go so far as to make fun of you for Tide Pods. This is sick. We are all sick. Don’t listen to the adult bullies, who have been brainwashed by a propaganda machine.

The more hate you see from some adults, the more bullying you experience, means what you are doing is working. Keep doing what you are doing and succeed where we’ve failed.

Make sure your children never have to text you: Mom, I’m on lockdown.
