Slow start to election interest

Interest in the upcoming Town Council race has been relatively light thus far and that seems to be keeping two incumbents on the fence before deciding whether to run.

Council Members Ginny Dickey and Henry Leger both stated they have not yet decided whether they will be seeking another term on the council.

It would be a third term for both.

Both indicated they want more time to see how the potential race takes shape before making a decision. The third incumbent council member with an expiring term, Councilman Tait Elkie, has already said he will not seek a second term.

As of Monday there were four people who indicated interest in the council race and had dropped by Town Hall to pick up an information packet.

Those four include Lina Bellenir, Arnold Belzil, Nick DePorter and Alan Magazine. However, as of Monday only Bellenir had filed a statement of organization that allows them to collect signatures on nominating petitions.

In the mayoral race, only incumbent Mayor Linda Kavanagh has picked up the packet material and has filed a statement of organization.

Kavanagh is expected to turn in her completed nominating papers soon after the early date for filing on Monday, April 28.

The final deadline for turning in the nominating paperwork is Wednesday, May 28.

The primary election will be held Tuesday, Aug. 26.

This is the first local election for Fountain Hills to be held with the late-summer/fall election dates. If a runoff for the council is needed it will be with the Nov. 4 Election Day.

Adding potential confusion to the election process this year will be non-affiliated voters seeking to vote in the primary.

Any voters who have signed on for the permanent early ballot list to vote by mail, but are not registered to vote with a specified political party, will need to request a ballot for the August primary election.

The recognized parties in Arizona for the 2014 election cycle include Americans Elect, Democrat, Libertarian and Republican.

Those voters registered as non-affiliated, independent or non-partisan will not automatically receive a ballot in the mail even if they are on the permanent early voter list. A ballot must be requested either by mail or online.

Visit the Maricopa County Recorder’s website, www.recorder.maricopa.gov, for information regarding a request for an early ballot.

Anyone not affiliated with a party who goes to the polls on Election Day may request a specific ballot at that time.

Since Town Council elections are non-partisan, however, one may also request a “council only” ballot that will not include the additional state and federal offices up for election this year.
