Fountain Hills seeking landmark status for community centerpiece

First step is approved

The Fountain Hills History and Culture Advisory Commission has completed an application seeking status on the National Register of Historic Landmarks for the town’s iconic fountain.

The commission approved the application at its May 8 meeting asking staff to review the material. Town Recreation Manager Ryan Preston said if staff determines the application needs further work it will return it to the commission. If it is determined the application is satisfactory it will be sent to Historic Preservation Office for the State of Arizona. The application must be approved there before consideration for the national register. The council does not need to review or approve the application ahead of submittal, according to Preston.

Landmarks for consideration must be at least 50 years old. It also must represent an important part of the history or architecture of an area.
