What we do know is on Primary Election night, July 30, there was an alleged physical altercation at the Batchelor Pad where Republicans were having an election watch party.
The Times Independent reported that MCSO was called. Town official names of Friedel, Kalivianakis and Toth were mentioned. Police reports were filed which included requests by law enforcement for misdemeanor assault charges. Two of them.
We do know a witness stated they saw Kalivianakis get poked in the chest. There was alleged pushback in response, and a person was removed from the premises. The owners and other attendees were interviewed by deputies.
What we don't know is the outcome of this Republican infighting after nearly 90 days. According to the Times Independent (10/01/24), MCSO described the (reported) material as a “partial release.” The incident report provided is part of an ongoing/open investigation.
Still now? Just silence. It's deafening. Plenty of stories abound throughout town, but it's becoming clear that nothing will likely be said by the police or reported by this newspaper as to what happened until after the election.
Is there a fear that it might affect the outcome of local elections? Well, maybe it should. Don't you wonder what happened? With the names Friedel and Toth mentioned, I wonder why we don't know more.
But let's hope the Republicans can go through an election night without more charges being filed. Let's not have more lapses in judgment and civility.
And on Nov. 5, let's hold accountable those who act otherwise. For the good of the town.
Editor’s note: As with any ongoing investigation, the Times Independent will provide an update when MCSO has concluded its work or provided additional information. Reader reactions, pro or con, are welcomed at AzOpinions@iniusa.org.
