Public property decisions need consistent community input in Fountain Hills
I applaud the Fountain Hills Unified School District's recent decision to place the sale of surplus land on the ballot for a community vote. Superintendent Cain's statement that he was glad the public decided on the disposition of the land is a welcome acknowledgment of taxpayers’ rights and a move toward greater transparency.
This positive step makes me question a past decision by the district regarding two of our school's athletic courts located on the high school campus. Years ago, the district chose to hand these facilities over to a private group for a membership-based pickleball club. At the time, this was a questionable decision, but now, with the middle school located on the same campus as the high school, those courts are even more essential for student athletic and recreational use.
