There’s a lot of reasons to vote for the proposed property tax. You can read them every week in these letters. You can also read the main reason not to vote for the tax – too much spending by government – but here’s one that has not been mentioned.
I was firmly in the camp of giving them the tax, until something happened. Does anyone know that our P&Z approved rezoning the land at the corner of Trevino and Saguaro to C2 from C1 to build a massive nursing home at the entrance to Fountain Hills? This eyesore will rise 53’ into the air, be 168,000 square feet, create massive congestion in the Saguaro/Trevino (McDonald’s) area, introduce truck traffic for deliveries right into a residential neighborhood and so many more wonderful things for the town.

This came before our council and their response, although measured, should have immediately dismissed this as out of hand. They did not. Instead, they argued back and forth on the architectural virtues of this eyesore, landscaping, colors, whatever. This three-story monstrosity on land currently zoned for single story will block views of some pretty expensive homes. These same homes will hear the trucks because they will literally be in their back yards. And everyone will have to pass this thing going to and from Fountain Hills.
This will be back before the council for approval sometime soon. Show up and speak out. As they ponder the color of a structure that has no place in this location, I hope they ponder this: If they don’t kill this completely, leaving the current C1 zoning in place before May, then my vote is no. Yours should be, too. Consider this: $1.9 million to P&Z this year. I’ll ruin your property value for free, I promise. Elect me. Ha!
