Mr. Polk in last week’s letters to the editor says, “No Muslim helped to build this country.”

Is he aware that 15 to 30 percent of the male slaves were Muslim and about 15 percent of women slaves were Muslim? The slaves “literally” built this country including the capitol.

It’s also said of the Muslim slaves that they stood out from their compatriots because of their “resistance, determination and education.” Some of them had held positions of importance in their home countries such as Ayuba Suleiman Dialio, who was the son of an Imam in Africa, and Omar Ibn Said who was an Islamic scholar. And, Muslims are one of the most racially diverse religious groups in the U.S.A.

Thomas Jefferson defended religious freedom including that of Muslims. William Lancaster said that he was most certain that in the future Papists and Muslims may occupy the Presidency and he saw nothing wrong with that. Subsequently our constitution prohibited any religious test. Are these the Judeo-Christian principles of which you spoke?

Mr. Polk goes on to say that since his son was in Tower 1 on 9-11 I mustn’t give him my “wonderful Muslim tripe.” Many Muslims also died in the twin towers that day including some first responders.

In pointing to TV pictures of “the Middle East cheering 9-11” he makes my point. Can we really say the whole Middle East supported 9-11 because we saw some people cheering over there? Of course not! That would be like saying when the Ku Klux Klan marches in opposition to Jews and Blacks they are representing the whole U.S.A.

Mr. Polk maintains that “our” terrorists are acting on their own flawed philosophy, but Islamic terrorists are representing all of Islam. That’s ridiculous! Islamic terrorists are as far from Islam as the Klan is from Christianity!
