Park Place cell tower approved

The Town Council has approved a special use permit that will allow for the installation of cellular transmission equipment on the roof of the Park Place apartments on Avenue of the Fountains.

Verizon Wireless has proposed placing three sectors on the roof of the buildings, one of which exceeds the maximum allowable height of 54 feet. At its location the equipment would be 56’4”, which requires for the special use permit.

The cell towers are also within 300 feet of residential property.

There is also a requirement of the Park Place development agreement calling for public Wi-Fi in the downtown area. Staff has said their research has been inconclusive as to whether these antennas are necessary, or would enhance the Wi-Fi connection.

Phillip Blackerby, a business owner on Avenue of the Fountains told the council that his cellular reception, which is Verizon, has been severely curtailed with construction of the Park Place development from the very beginning. He said he supports the cell towers so his reception can be improved and he can work at his desk again.

The council vote was 6-0 to approve the permit.
