Palomino Boulevard construction to begin in Fountain Hills

Curb work to start Aug. 11

The reconstruction of Palomino Boulevard is set to begin in early August, marking the start of a major capital improvement project aimed at significantly enhancing pavement conditions on a street badly in need of repairs.

Work is to begin the week of August 11 with the removal and repair of concrete curbs. This marks the first visible phase of the project. During this time, some driveways may be temporarily inaccessible and impacted residents will receive advance notice, according to Town of Fountain Hills Community Relations Director/PIO Mike Pelton.

“The project includes the full-depth removal and replacement of asphalt pavement along Palomino Boulevard from Palisades Boulevard to Fountain Hills Boulevard, an approximately 1.4-mile stretch of road,” Pelton said. “The current pavement has reached the end of its useful life, and reconstruction is necessary to ensure long-term safety and performance.”

The important aspects of the project include the removal of approximately 49,771 square yards of asphalt, installation of new asphalt pavement, concrete curb and gutter replacement, driveway tie-ins, utility adjustments and relocations as needed, replacement of two existing curb ramps along Palisades Boulevard, reconstruction of approximately 60 feet of very steep sidewalk on Palisades Boulevard — this section will be regraded to reduce the slope and provide a flatter, more ADA-compliant pathway and the construction of a new curb ramp on the southwest corner at Fountain Hills Boulevard to support a future sidewalk connection on Fountain Hills Boulevard, and provide a safe refuge area for pedestrians currently walking along the roadway.

“At this time, there is no confirmed start date for milling and paving the roadway,” Pelton said. “Town staff are currently reviewing options to ensure cost efficiency and will provide updates when a tentative timeline is established.”

The Fountain Hills Town Council approved the project with a budget of $5 million.

Pelton said the town appreciates the patience and cooperation of residents and motorists during this infrastructure improvement project.
