Our Community Center deserves better

Posted

One of many definitions of “community” is “a feeling of fellowship with others.” The Fountain Hills Community Center is a wonderful example of providing many opportunities to come together and enjoy fellowship.

Its mission is to serve the Fountain Hills residents by providing an opportunity to enhance the quality of life for its citizens by: Providing a gathering place for civic, non-profit and community events; promoting the arts; developing a conference and convention trade.

It practices DEI – all are welcome, which makes it the excellent facility it is.

If the Community Center should be named in honoring someone for this wonderful gathering place, it should be a Fountain Hills resident who has given so much to improve our community. Someone who generously helps by volunteering countless hours to the many organizations that make this city great is a perfect candidate. These include Meals on Wheels, Stitcher’s of Hope, museum and library volunteers, teachers who spend many more than 40 hours a week to help students, statue donors, Make a Difference Day volunteers, the park trail stewards, the Community Band and Choir members, Turkey Trot helpers, just to name a few.

Did Charlie Kirk (not a resident) participate in any of those groups?

Political ideologies have no place in the naming of our Community Center. The republicans would be appalled to call it the Jimmy Carter Community Center, as the Democrats would be equally disgusted by a Charlie Kirk Community Center. This would create divisiveness in our town, which is the last thing we need.

Just because two or more Town Council members have ties to Mr. Kirk does not give them the right or power to force their dream on our community. Our Community Center deserves much better.
