Not a Minor investment

Businessman Jerry Minor delivered 17 vehicles of various makes, models and years to WestWorld, Scottsdale, to be sold last week at Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction.

He didn’t intend to take any back home to his SunRidge Canyon residence. The automobiles and trucks were offered at “no-reserve,” meaning that they would sell for the highest bidders’ price.

“I just hope to leave with a big fat check,” joked Minor, a town resident for 14 years.

Vehicles in his collection sold from $11,500 for a 1997 Jeep Wrangler to $165,000 for a 1948 Diamond T truck, a four-speed manual truck that had undergone a total body off restoration and considered one of the rarest collector trucks.

Collecting, rearing and reselling autos are both a business and a hobby for Minor and his wife, Thiry.

They have owned and operated a used car business in Elk River, Minn., for 41 years and passed along the passion for autos to their son and grandchildren.

The Minors spend about five and a half months in Arizona, and they keep busy the remainder of the year attending car auctions across the country or in Minnesota.

“We try to go to neat places,” said Minor, concentrating on two other Barrett-Jackson events and three Mecum car auctions.

His diverse offering of vehicles this year at Barrett-Jackson included: a 1941 Dodge pickup; 1941 Chevy pickup; 1941 Ford pickup; 1969 Chevelle; 1959 Chevrolet Apache pickup; 1967 Toyota; 1956 Willy’s Jeep; 1955 Chevrolet pickup; 1955 Desoto; 1965 Mustang convertible; 1967 Mercedes convertible; 1950 Chevrolet custom pickup; 1957 Buick convertible; 1952 Dodge Power Wagon; and 1955 Chevrolet Cameo pickup.

Minor buys the autos from various sellers around the country and restores them to their original condition. A surge in interest for pickup trucks reflects consumers’ interests, said Minor.

Land Cruiser sells

A 1977 Toyota FJ40 Land Cruiser mechanically and cosmetically restored by The Finishing Touch Body Shop sold for $101,750 at the RM Auctions at Arizona Biltmore.

The 15th annual two-day RM event set a state record for the sale of a 1958 Ferrari 250 GT LWB California Spider for $8.8 million. It is the 11th of only 50 California Spiders ever built.
