New call to the public guidelines in Fountain Hills too restrictive

OPINION — Why did the town council attack free speech? On Tuesday, Feb. 3, the majority of the council members voted to restrict our town residents’ ability to speak at the public meeting.

Make no mistake, five members will claim they “restored” the call to the public. What they really did was eliminate the existing call to the public in a prior meeting so they could create a new, highly restrictive call to the public procedure that makes it very difficult for most residents to make their voices heard in public. It mostly impacts the elderly, working residents and disabled. No small number, I would say.

Councilmembers McMahon and Kalivianakis voted against the attack because they believe in free speech to all, not the few.
