Neighbors tie potential grant funding to cell tower application

Raise concerns as council considered grant authorization

When the Fountain Hills Town Council considered authorizing a grant application it found there was opposition coming from a different, but not altogether surprising direction.

The grant request is for $50,000 from the T-Mobile Hometown Grant program to fund lighting for the Centennial Pavilion shade structure. Residents who live around Fountain Hills Boulevard and Ironwood Drive who oppose an application from T-Mobile to replace a cell tower with a taller one strongly objected to the town asking T-Mobile for grant funding.

Virginia O’Brien spoke for about a dozen residents present at the April 1 council meeting and reportedly up to 200 who live in the neighborhood where the cell service provider wants to replace a transmission facility in a church parking lot at Fountain Hills Boulevard and Ironwood Drive.
