Maricopa County Sheriff’s deputies spent much of Monday searching for a man first reported as a suspicious person. They had not located the individual, identified as Leonard Barilone, 33, by the end of the day.

Deputies received a report of a suspicious person in the 14000 block of N. Armijo Drive on Monday morning. The suspect was reported attempting to open a security door at a residence.

After searching the area deputies were unable to locate the man, but in following up on Facebook reports were able to identify the suspect as Leonard Barilone. An initial report in the media, with information from the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office, identified the man as Dominick Barilone, who is the suspect’s brother.

After identifying the suspect MCSO found there is a misdemeanor warrant for his arrest for failure to appear in court in Phoenix.

The trail led deputies to the home of Barilone’s father in Fountain Hills. The father described his son as “mentally ill” to deputies and expressed concern for his safety with the law enforcement search.

Deputies told the father that Leonard’s safety was also their concern and the father eventually agreed that if he heard from his son he would get him to turn himself in.

As of Tuesday morning deputies had not located Barilone.

MCSO spokesman Deputy Joaquin Enriquez said deputies had concern that Barilone was seen near schools and parks in the community.

“He is wanted for an outstanding warrant for trespassing,” Enriquez said, “while the charge may not rise to the level of an active search his suspicious behavior around the schools and parks is a great concern.”
