McDowell Mountain Elementary School may soon have a new principal, as the Fountain Hills Unified School District Governing Board Wednesday night gave Superintendent Tom Lawrence the go-ahead to offer a contract to applicant Valerie Dehombreux, M.Ed.
It was announced earlier this year that current McDowell Mountain principal Joanne Meehan would be retiring at the conclusion of the 2013-14 academic year, kick-starting a search to find a replacement for the administrative position at the K-3 school.
According to Superintendent Lawrence, an original field of 31 applicants was later whittled down to just four undergoing the full interview process, which involved a 14-person committee including administration, district and community members.

“[Ms. Dehombreux] impressed the committee, garnering the majority of recommendations to move forward,” Lawrence explained at the April 23 school board meeting.
The board unanimously approved a motion to offer Dehombreux a one-year contract. Upon acceptance, her tenure in FHUSD would begin on July 1.
