After the donations were tallied up, Fountain Hills Mayor Gerry Friedel was able to present the Extended Hands Food Bank in Fountain Hills with a check for $12,000.
Making a pledge to donate $1 for every runner who beat him in the Thanksgiving Day Turkey Trot Friedel finished at number 360, so he chipped in an entire month’s salary as mayor of $500 and collected donations from those sponsors who matched his pledge. Several of the donors joined Friedel in presenting the check on Dec. 3.
“This is one race I was happy to lose,” Friedel said. “The Turkey Trot brings out the best in our community. Every runner who passed me not only burned some calories, but helped put food on a neighbor’s table, and I couldn’t be more grateful.”
