The Fountain Hills Theater opened 2015 with “Same Time, Next Year,” and it runs until Jan. 25. Director Peter J. Hill once again has given us a hit. The two cast members are Heidi Carpenter and Chad Campbell. They are absolutely delightful and received a well-deserved standing ovation.
It’s promoted as a romantic comedy, but it is also one of the most poignant love stories that will stir emotions and pull at your heartstrings. Some would tell you it is entirely possible to be in love with two people at the same time and that the heart knows what the heart knows. You decide.
In the play, Doris and George meet by chance and after a night together they realize they have something special. There is only one problem…they both are married to other people. Their solution is to meet once a year at the same hotel and that is what they do. The year is 1951.

In the set changes we hear broadcasters giving us the news and we see Doris and George evolve with the years. We hear about their spouses…never see them but feel like we know them. Children are born, jobs change, and life goes on.
But once a year they meet for a weekend same time, each year. Someone once said, “Life happens while you are making plans.”
Between sets, Alicia and Bob Feugate come in and out of the room as the innkeepers. They never speak, but one little touch that Bob does is so sweet and don’t miss it.
P.S. The big fundraiser “Broadway in the Hills” is set for Sunday, March 29. Order your tickets before Jan. 31 and they are only $100 each. The theme is “Speakeasy” and the food sounds fantastic. Hope to see all of you there.
