Elected senator in 2014 after serving in the Arizona House from 2007-2015, Kavanagh serves as vice-chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee. He has submitted nine bills including one that would increase the penalty for theft of an American flag.

Legislators to report new session plans Jan. 21

Legislative District 23 Arizona State legislators Sen. John Kavanagh and Reps. Michelle Ugenti-Rita and Jay Lawrence will be the featured speakers at the Fountain Hills Republican Club meeting Saturday, Jan. 21.
The meeting starts at 9 a.m.at the Fountain Hills Community Center. The speakers will offer a preview of the 53rd session of the Arizona State Legislature and bills they will present for enactment.
Elected senator in 2014 after serving in the Arizona House from 2007-2015, Kavanagh serves as vice-chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee. He has submitted nine bills including one that would increase the penalty for theft of an American flag.
Ugenti-Rita who was first elected to the House in 2010 has submitted four bills including one that would amend Arizona revised statutes relating to the Arizona State Retirement system. She is the House Ways and Means Committee chair.
Lawrence, chairman of the Military and Veterans Committee and member of the Health Regulatory Committee has submitted nine bills including eligibility requirements for child care assistance and making it a felony to harm the Salt River horses, currently a misdemeanor. He was elected in 2014 and re-elected in 2016.
The club will also elect and install new officers for 2017-18. The nominating committee will present the following slate: President Rosemary Hansen; First Vice President Leona Johnston; Second Vice President David Spelich; Third Vice President Shari Morris; Secretary Boe James; and Treasurer Nicole Oswald. Nominations will be accepted from the floor. All members who have paid their 2017 dues as of January 21 will be eligible to vote.
The Honorable Michael Reagan, McDowell Mountain Justice of the Peace, will conduct the installation of the new officers immediately after the program and the election. Reagan is a former chairman of Legislative District 23 and father of Arizona Secretary of State Michele Reagan.
All meetings are open to the general public. Winter visitors are also welcome. No reservations are required. Complimentary coffee and light breakfast refreshments are available at 8:30 a.m.
The club will also have its monthly social at the Fireside Grill at the Lexington Hotel, Tuesday, Jan. 24 at 6 p.m. Food and drink are available for purchase; no reservations needed. No speeches; just good political conversation. Topic du jour: the Presidential Inauguration.
