Kindness

The last line of Tennessee Williams’ famous play “A Streetcar Named Desire,” as the men lead Blanche DuBois away, she says, “I’ve always counted on the kindness of strangers.” In the play it is poignant and sad.

But in my case, because I did a dumb thing, a stranger was very kind to me and I am so grateful.

My stranger saw I was in trouble and came to me in the form a young man in a SUV wearing a Detroit Lions T-shirt. I lived most of my working life in Detroit and know for many people the Lions are still their team.

It gives one faith and hope that there are still good people in our midst and we should recognize them. He would not take any money, so one of my favorite charities is now $100 richer. Thank you from me to a young man named Lamont Jones, who took time in this day to help a lady in distress.

I told him it would come back around and he would be in line for a good deed. I believe this, just as I believe that God was looking out for me that day as he does every day.

Check December 7’s Arizona Republic editorial….the next to last paragraph on page B11, “Perhaps the first step should be a small one. Take a chance. In some small way this holiday season, trust a stranger.”

God works in mysterious ways.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to everyone!
